To be an internationally recognized Centre that is committed to academic and professional excellence in the sciences of craniofacial imaging; oral diagnostics; oral pathology and oral/ maxillofacial surgery.



To provide quality education and training through creation, preservation, integration, dissemination and utilization of knowledge in craniofacial imaging, oral/ maxillofacial surgery and oral pathology/oral medicine.



·         Relevance of Service Provision

To develop and implement academic programmes relevant to the needs of the consumers and stakeholders.  Academic staff will be empowered to facilitate relevant and evidence-based service provision.


·         Integrity and Professionalism

To uphold the virtues of truth, tolerance and accountability.  It shall nurture responsible professionalism, promote mentorship and maintain ethical behaviour.


·         Leadership

To provide leadership in setting the national and international agenda in oral/maxillofacial surgery, craniofacial radiology and oral pathology/ oral medicine.


·         Research culture

To initiate, sustain, disseminate and implement recommendations from relevant and innovative craniofacial research from both external and internal sources.  Research activities are prioritized as part of the core business of the Department.

To promote meritocracy and foster a work environment characterized by team spirit and teamwork.  Participation in continuous education activities is mandatory for professional progression.

To promote sensitivity and responsiveness to societal needs and strive to offer its services to consumers in all socio-economic strata.  Interactions between the Department and its clients must be distinguished by mutual respect, equity and dignity.

     To show respect for the environment, particularly in the aspect of management of waste.



The mandate of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine is to provide specialist healthcare education and training, conduct and publish relevant research, and provide evidence-based specialist healthcare.  Over the next 5-year strategic plan period from 2010 to 2015 the department is committed to upholding high quality service by fulfilling the following quality objectives:


  1. To review and implement academic programs in compliance with set policy and regulations.
  2. To offer services to our students, patients and others customers in compliance with the Service Delivery Charter.
  3. To ensure utilization of resources in compliance with the set budgetary levels.
  4. To increase Employee Satisfaction Index by 1% annually.
  5. To increase the Customer Satisfaction Index by 1% annually.
  6. To increase the number of publications in refereed journals by at least 10% annually.
  7.  Undertake weekly Journal Club and continuing medical education programs in partnership with professional associations and industry.
  8. To grow research grants and non-teaching revenue by 5% annually.
  9. To promote environmental sustainability by engaging in at least 1 relevant activity annually.
