The Department of Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine of the University of Nairobi on Friday 10th August, 2018 launched a new textbook for undergraduate students at a function presided over by Prof. Julius A Ogengo the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs and attended by several academicians from the College of Health Sciences.

The text; Essentials of Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma, a Manual for Undergraduate students is authored by two departmental academic staff members, Dr. Walter A. Odhiambo (current Chairman of the department) and Professor Symon W. Guthua (the most senior Professor in the department) is meant for undergraduate students in dentistry and medicine but is also a recommended elementary text for postgraduates in maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT and even general Surgery.

While addressing the participants during the launch, Prof. Ogengo commended the authors for this academic advancement noting that this was the first textbook published by the academic staff at the School of Dental Sciences. He lauded Prof. Guthua for high standard of clinical work and academic mentorship confessing that he had personally been inspired by Prof. Guthua’s hard work and academic discipline which was evident in his numerous journal publications.

The DVC AA expressed concern that many academicians after rising to the level of professorship stopped research and publications retreating into a state of premature academic menopause. This he said led to the stagnation of academic programs and University growth as well creating a negative impact on national development.

The function held at the modern Nairobi Hospital Convention center was sponsored by the Medispeciality supplies ltd and Cosmos Pharmaceuticals ltd in partnership with the department as part of the public /private institutions development programs.

The DVC AA was accompanied by the acting Principal College of Health Sciences, Prof. Walter Jaoko , Dean School of Dental Sciences Dr. Regina Mutave and Heads of Departments from the College of Health Sciences. Also in attendance was Dr. MeshackOnguti a renowned Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon and the Chairman of East African Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Dr. Eric Kahugu.
